The three crossings
Queenston-Lewiston Bridge connects Highway 405 to the I-190 and is usually the fastest for Buffalo airport traffic. It handles a high volume but moves well outside peak periods.
Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls is the most convenient if you are already in the Falls, but it carries heavy tourist traffic in summer.
Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is the most direct into downtown Buffalo and the busiest commercial crossing of the three, which cuts both ways.
Documents every passenger needs
Every passenger, including infants and children, needs one of: a valid passport, a NEXUS card, or an enhanced driver's licence issued by a participating province.
Children travelling without both parents should carry a letter of consent from the absent parent or guardian. Border officers ask about this more often than people expect.
Have documents out and ready before reaching the booth, and let the officer address each passenger directly. A chauffeur cannot answer immigration questions on your behalf.
Timing the crossing
Wait times swing from five minutes to over an hour. The reliable pattern: weekday mornings into the US and weekday evenings back into Canada are heaviest, along with Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and every long weekend.
The CBSA and CBP both publish live border wait times, and both are worth checking an hour before departure — the numbers shift fast enough that yesterday's experience tells you nothing.
If you are catching a flight from BUF
Add a two-hour cushion on top of the two-hour drive. That sounds excessive until the Peace Bridge backs up on a Friday and you are watching the clock in a stationary queue.
A pre-booked car helps here because the operator is checking wait times as part of planning the departure hour rather than discovering the queue at the bridge.
