Day Trips from Toronto Without a Car

Ontario rewards a day trip. Most of the good ones are genuinely awkward without a vehicle — which is the entire problem a chauffeured day solves.

Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake

Ninety minutes each way. The Falls themselves in the morning, the Niagara Parkway north through the fruit belt, and Niagara-on-the-Lake for lunch and a winery or two in the afternoon.

This is the classic and it earns the status. Eight to ten hours door to door covers it without rushing. Transit gets you to the Falls but not usefully around the wine region, which is spread across kilometres of concession roads.

Blue Mountain and Georgian Bay

Two hours northwest. Skiing from December to March, and in summer the village, the Georgian Trail and the beaches at Wasaga.

Effectively unreachable without a car, particularly in winter when the snow squalls come off the bay. This is the trip that most justifies a winter-equipped SUV and a driver who knows the road.

Muskoka and the lakes

Two and a quarter hours north to Gravenhurst and Bracebridge, longer to Huntsville. Lakes, granite, and the cottage landscape Ontario is known for.

Beautiful in autumn, when the colour along Highway 11 is the point of the drive rather than an incidental. Avoid Friday afternoons northbound and Sunday evenings southbound unless you enjoy the 400 in a queue.

Stratford and St Jacobs

Stratford is two hours west — a theatre town with a genuinely good festival season from spring to autumn, and a restaurant scene that outperforms its size.

St Jacobs, near Waterloo, has the large farmers' market and Mennonite country around it. The two pair naturally into one westward day.

Prince Edward County

Two and a half hours east. Wineries, Sandbanks Provincial Park and a food scene that has grown substantially. Quieter than Niagara and, for many people, better.

The County is dispersed — the distances between wineries are real, and the roads are rural. It is close to impossible to do properly without a vehicle.

Making it work

All of these are booked as a full-day hourly hire rather than two point-to-point legs, because the day involves waiting, multiple stops and a return time you cannot fix in advance.

Ten hours covers Niagara, Muskoka, Blue Mountain or Stratford comfortably. Prince Edward County wants eleven or twelve. An SUV is the sensible default for luggage, wine cases and Ontario winters.
