The building and the crowd
Scotiabank Arena holds around 19,000 for basketball and hockey, and sits directly on top of Union Station. Tip-off and puck drop are usually 7 or 7:30pm on weeknights, which puts arrivals straight into the evening peak.
Playoff nights are a different animal — the surrounding blocks, including Maple Leaf Square outside, fill with people who do not have tickets. Plan an extra thirty minutes in each direction.
Getting there
Be dropped 30 to 45 minutes before start. That is enough for security, a drink and your seat.
Ask to be dropped a block off the arena rather than at the doors. Bay Street immediately outside is congested with rideshares and taxis doing exactly what you are trying to avoid, and a block's walk is faster than three minutes of crawling.
Getting home
Agree the pickup point before you go in. Two to three blocks north or east is the rule, and it is the single most useful piece of advice in this article.
Expect poor mobile signal in the minutes after the final buzzer — 19,000 phones on the same cells. This is exactly why the meeting point is agreed in advance rather than negotiated by text afterwards.
Hourly hire suits game nights well: dinner in the Entertainment District, the game, and home, on one booking with no re-hailing in between.
Dinner and the game
The Entertainment District and King West are five minutes away and full of options. The practical sequencing is dinner at 5 or 5:30pm, dropped at the arena by 6:45pm, collected after.
Check start times on the club's own schedule — nationally televised games occasionally move, and a 7pm you assumed can turn out to be 7:30 or 8.
