The basics
The Toronto Islands sit a short crossing from the mainland, reached by ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the foot of Bay Street. Ferries serve Centre Island, Ward's Island and Hanlan's Point, and the island you choose changes the day: Centre Island for families and the amusement area, Ward's for the quiet village and beaches, Hanlan's for the beach and the airport side.
There are no private cars on the islands. Once you are across, everything is on foot or by bicycle.
Timing the ferry
In July and August, and on any warm weekend, the terminal queue is the single biggest time cost of the trip — it can comfortably exceed an hour at midday. Buy tickets in advance and arrive early; a 9am or 10am sailing is a completely different experience from a 1pm one.
Check the current schedule before you go, as sailings vary by season and by island. Returning, the last sailings fill quickly on summer evenings — do not leave the return to the final boat.
Getting to the terminal
Parking at the foot of Bay Street is limited and expensive, and in summer it is often full. A drop-off at the terminal removes the problem entirely and takes about ten minutes from most downtown addresses.
For the return, agree a pickup time with a generous margin, or book hourly so the car simply waits. Ferry arrival times are approximate on a busy day, and a fixed pickup that assumes otherwise creates unnecessary pressure.
How long to allow
Three hours island-side is the minimum that feels worthwhile. A full day with a picnic and bicycles is better. Add roughly ninety minutes total for the crossings and queueing in high season.
Bring what you need — island food options are limited and seasonal, and there is no quick trip back for a forgotten item.
