The venues worth knowing
History in the Beaches east end, a mid-size room that draws strong touring acts. The Danforth Music Hall, a restored 1919 theatre on the Danforth. Massey Hall downtown, the city's acoustic jewel after its long restoration. The Phoenix Concert Theatre on Sherbourne. Roy Thomson Hall for orchestral and larger seated shows.
Capacities run from a few hundred to a few thousand, which changes everything about the evening.
Why smaller venues are easier
A 2,500-capacity room empties in a few minutes without overwhelming the street. There is no twenty-minute exit crawl and no need to agree a pickup point three blocks away — the venue's own street usually works.
The trade-off is that several of these venues are in neighbourhoods where parking is genuinely scarce. The Danforth and the Beaches are residential with permit parking; Sherbourne and the downtown core are metered and busy. Being dropped is the simplest answer in all of them.
Making an evening of it
Each of these venues sits in a proper neighbourhood rather than an entertainment complex, which is the appeal. The Danforth has Greektown around it. History is a short walk from the Beaches. Massey Hall is surrounded by the downtown restaurant density.
For dinner-then-show, an hourly booking of four or five hours covers the whole evening including the wait, and works out close to what two point-to-point legs would cost once you add a third stop.
Winter
Most of these venues have limited indoor waiting space and queues form outside. In January that matters. A booked car that arrives when you text, rather than a wait on the pavement for a rideshare, is a different experience entirely.
Check doors and set times on the venue's own site — mid-size rooms run tighter schedules than arenas and support acts start closer to the advertised time.
