Toronto to Niagara Falls: The Complete Day Trip Plan

Ninety minutes each way, one waterfall, several wineries, and a timing plan that avoids the worst of the QEW.

The drive

It is about 130 km from downtown Toronto to the Falls, almost entirely on the QEW around the western end of Lake Ontario through Burlington, Grimsby and St Catharines. Ninety minutes is realistic outside summer weekends; budget two hours on a July Saturday.

Leaving Toronto before 9am or after 10:30am materially changes the drive. The eastbound return between 4pm and 7pm on a Sunday is the worst window of the week.

At the Falls

Table Rock puts you directly beside the Horseshoe Falls and is the single best free view. The boat cruise runs from roughly April to November and gets you into the mist at the base — it is the one paid attraction almost everyone says was worth it.

Journey Behind the Falls runs year-round through tunnels cut into the rock face. Clifton Hill is the loud, neon, arcade-and-haunted-house strip, which is either the point or the thing to avoid depending on who is with you.

For lunch, the Fallsview hotel restaurants have the view; the Skylon Tower revolving restaurant has the higher one.

North to Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Niagara Parkway north from the Falls is the prettiest twenty minutes of driving in southern Ontario — the river on one side, the fruit belt on the other, and considerably less traffic than the QEW.

Niagara-on-the-Lake at the end of it has a preserved nineteenth-century main street, the Shaw Festival theatres, and the highest concentration of wineries in the country. Two tastings is comfortable; three is pushing a day trip.

Winter is underrated

From November to January the Winter Festival of Lights runs along the Parkway and through the tourist areas, the mist freezes the trees along the gorge into something genuinely spectacular, and the crowds are a fraction of summer.

The drive is usually faster too, though we watch the QEW for squall warnings coming off the lake and will move a departure time rather than drive into one.

Quick answers

How long do you need in Niagara Falls?
Four to five hours at the Falls themselves covers the main viewpoints, one attraction and lunch without rushing. Adding Niagara-on-the-Lake makes it a full eight to ten hour day from Toronto.
What is the best time of year to visit Niagara Falls from Toronto?
Late spring and early autumn give you the boat cruise with manageable crowds. Winter is quieter and visually striking but the boat does not run.
