Toronto Zoo and African Lion Safari: A Family Day Out

One is in the city's east end, the other is an hour west. They are very different days.

Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo sits in the Rouge Valley in Scarborough, about 45 minutes from downtown outside peak. It is large — genuinely large — and the walking is the thing families underestimate. Plan on four to six hours and accept that you will not see all of it.

The site is spread across pavilions and outdoor habitats connected by long paths with real elevation change. Strollers are essential for small children, and comfortable shoes for everyone else.

African Lion Safari

African Lion Safari, near Hamilton, is roughly an hour to ninety minutes west of Toronto. Its distinguishing feature is the drive-through game reserve: you pass through the animal enclosures in a vehicle rather than walking past them.

Two important practicalities. The park has rules about which vehicles may enter the reserve, and soft-top or convertible vehicles are typically excluded — check current requirements before booking transport. And the primate sections are notoriously hard on vehicle paintwork and trim.

For that reason, most chauffeured visits use the park's own safari tour vehicles for the reserve section, with the car parked outside. Tell us you are going there and we will plan it that way.

Which to choose

Toronto Zoo suits ages roughly four and up, groups who are happy walking, and anyone who wants a full day inside the city without a long drive.

African Lion Safari suits younger children, anyone for whom several kilometres of walking is a barrier, and groups who want the novelty of the drive-through.

Both are seasonal in feel: the zoo is open year-round but far more pleasant in spring and autumn; the safari park operates a seasonal schedule, so check dates before committing.

Transport notes

For either, an SUV or van earns its keep — strollers, bags, changes of clothes and tired children at the end of the day. Child seats are provided free; give us ages and weights when booking.

The zoo drive is straightforward. The safari park is a genuine day trip, so an hourly booking with the car waiting usually works better than two separate point-to-point legs.
